The phenomenon that both Nietzsche and Heidegger refer to as “nihilism” is often understood as a historical event, an episode in late modern Western culture. 1 The event is taken to be a widespread collapse of confidence in what Nietzsche calls our “highest values,” especially religious and moral values, at least among the educated classes in the latter half of the nineteenth century.According to Heidegger, Nietzsche interprets the course of Western history in a metaphysical sense, whereby the “destining” of Western history gives rise to nihilism, which allows for the Nietzschean pronouncement “God is dead.”.Nihilism, as viewed by Nietzsche following the death of God, is a realization of the meaninglessness of existence. The source of this meaninglessness is the absence of God or any other transcendent interpretation of existence.
